COMMUNITY IN SCHOOLS

Communities In Schools of the Permian Basin (CIS/Permian Basin) provides educational support and guidance within the school setting to those students who are at the highest risk of dropping out. The State of Texas adopted the Communities In Schools (CIS) model in 1979 specifically to address the State’s high drop out rate. The program in the Permian Basin is one of a twenty-seven member state network that has been very effective in helping young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life. The five CIS basics are based on the belief that every child needs and deserves:

A personal one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
A safe place to learn and grow
A healthy start and a healthy future
A marketable skill to use upon graduation
A chance to give back to peers and community

CIS/Permian Basin is currently serving twelve campuses in MISD and ECISD, where students are referred to CIS by teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents. Once in the program students receive help in the form of homework assistance, personalized tutorials, and access to computers. CIS/Permian Basin monitors academics, attendance, and behavior. Progress must be made in all areas for continuation of services. CIS acknowledges that those students who are failing one or more subjects, who have high incidence of absenteeism and behavioral issues are at a high risk of not graduating. While personalized tutorials, homework assistance and access to computers do get a few back on the right track, far too many require year round support to remain in school and be successful. Currently in partnership with Junior League of Midland.  CIS now provides mentoring services through IMPACT. Mentoring Programs of CIS are XY Zone and Project Athena.

              CIS Mission Statement
